LOOKING FOR AN NON-MUSHY SELF-HELP BOOK?
WHAT MAKES IT SO GREAT?
If you’ve given the self-help genre a whirl and just aren’t into it, you’re probably just reading the wrong books. Hear me out: You Are A Badass opened some sort of fire up inside me, and I have now read it multiple times and told dozens of friends to keep it on their bedside table, on their phone as an audio book, or anywhere that will remind them how utterly amazing they are.
Each chapter starts with an anecdote that leads to lessons and exercises to help you let go of the all the junk that holds you back. The advice isn’t that far off from what you’d read in an old-school self-help book, but Sincero presents them with a fresh perspective. They’re universal topics, like ‘Mind Over Matter’ and ‘Forgiveness,’ with solutions tailored to modern-day scenarios. One mind-blowing chapter in Part 4: How To Get Over Your Own B.S. Already delivers this nugget of gold:
“Our entire existence on this planet is determined by how we perceive our reality.”
Followed by the realization that sentences like…
Are just our way of making excuses for ourselves. “‘I’ll never find a good single man because there aren’t any out there.’ Really? Was the awesome guy your friend Deb just met the lone survivor of the good-guy genocide?”
The chapters all culminate in a HOW-TO list of ways to incorporate these positive changes into your life. My favorite part about finishing a chapter is the message of SELF LOVE she throws at you for the last step of every lesson. As Jenn says, “ When we’re happy and all in love with ourselves, we can’t be bothered with the bullshit.”
“When you live your life doing the things that turn you on, that you’re good at, that bring you joy, that makes you shove stuff in people’s faces and scream, ‘Check this out!!!” you walk around so lit up that you shoot sunbeams out of your eyeballs, which automatically lights up the world around you. Which is precisely why you are here: to shine your big-ass ball of fire onto this world of ours. A world that literally depends on light to survive”
